Javier Red is a Mexican-born, Chicago-based jazz pianist, composer, bandleader, and entrepreneur whose music bridges contemporary jazz, collective improvisation, and rhythmic traditions from around the world. Since relocating to Chicago in 2015, he has become an active voice in the city's creative music scene, developing a distinctive musical language shaped by a diverse range of influences, from Mexican popular music and Latin American song traditions to Stravinsky, modern jazz, and the rhythmic concepts of West Africa.
Though largely self-taught, Red has deepened his artistic vision through mentorship and ongoing studies with acclaimed saxophonist Steve Coleman, whose pioneering M-Base concepts have had a profound influence on his approach to rhythm, composition, and improvisation.
In 2019, Red released his first U.S. album with his Chicago-based group Imagery Converter on the legendary Delmark Records label. The recording was selected as Best Debut Album in the NPR Jazz Critics Poll, earning national recognition. In 2023, he released Life & Umbrella, an acclaimed quartet recording inspired by the daily life of a child with autism. The album was recognized as one of UK Vibe's Best Albums of 2023 and received praise from outlets including Chicago Reader, Jazziz, Radio France, Radio Hearer (Germany), and La Jornada (Mexico).
Red's current quartet features Dakarai Barclay (trumpet), Jeff Wheaton (bass), and Daniel Gayden (drums). Together, they perform original compositions alongside creative reinterpretations of works by jazz masters such as Thelonious Monk, Joe Henderson, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter, approaching the music through a lens of rhythmic repetition, collective improvisation, and strong individual voices. The ensemble has performed throughout Chicago and the Midwest and recently completed the recording of a new album featuring special guest Steve Coleman, scheduled for release in January 2027.
Earlier in his career, Red co-founded Ethos Trio, performing internationally at venues and festivals including the Kennedy Center's Celebrating Mexico and the International Festival Meet in Beijing. He has also performed at major cultural institutions and festivals including the Palacio de Bellas Artes, CENART, Eurojazz, Festival Internacional Cervantino, Havana Jazz Festival, Lima Jazz Festival, and the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center at the University of Notre Dame.
Today, Javier Red continues to compose, perform, and develop collaborative projects that connect audiences through creativity, improvisation, and cultural exchange. Drawing on his Mexican roots, his Chicago experience, and his ongoing artistic collaboration with Steve Coleman, Red's work seeks to create music that is both intellectually engaging and deeply human.
