Javier Red Quartet
EPK Original Compositions
EPK Jazz Tradition
Bio
In his latest project, Javier leads a new quartet featuring Dakarai Barclay (trumpet), Jeff Wheaton (bass), and Daniel Gayden (drums). This ensemble serves as a platform for musical exploration along three dimensions:
- Rhythmic Foundations: At the heart of the quartet’s sound is a deep engagement with West African rhythmic traditions. The group draws inspiration from concepts such as circular time and hand-clapping patterns. The idea of pulse—a steady, internalized rhythmic current shared among the musicians—serves as a central organizing principle. Additionally, the role of the master drummer, who introduces variation, dialogue, and leadership within the rhythmic structure, acts as a conceptual model for the soloist in the band, guiding and inspiring their improvisational choices through rhythmic interplay and dynamic contrast.
- Creative Identity: The quartet’s members bring together distinct generational and cultural perspectives. Javier, with a Mexican background and as the oldest member, contrasts with the rest of the band, who are significantly younger and rooted in the cultural landscape of South Chicago. Their influences span from the jazz tradition to hip hop. Javier intentionally composes and performs with these diverse voices in mind, allowing their individuality to shape the ensemble’s evolving sound.
- Reinvention and Reinterpretation: The group continually reimagines both Javier’s original compositions and selected works by jazz legends such as Thelonious Monk, Joe Henderson, John Coltrane, and Wayne Shorter. These particular pieces are chosen because they resonate deeply with Javier’s rhythmic explorations, offering fertile ground for reinterpretation and innovation. Through this process, the quartet bridges tradition and experimentation, honoring the past while pushing creative boundaries.
